Please reinstate Government funding

so families can get the food they need.

SIGN OUR PETITION TODAY

Help the Mission continue to provide food to families in need.

A Government decision to end emergency food funding, expected in this month’s budget, will result in a dramatic cut in the food parcels that we distribute to families who need them.

Currently, one in five New Zealanders do not have enough food to meet their health and wellbeing needs.  The cost of not providing the food needed will, at the simplest level, increase pressure across our health and criminal justice systems, and result in lost productivity.

Yet, in the upcoming budget, despite increasing demand, the Government has cut funding of food banks. From 1st July food banks across Aotearoa, including the Mission will have to turn families away.

Last year, we provided more than 50,000 boxes of food – that’s about 27,000 nutritious meals every week – to families who couldn’t afford food. Without Government funding, we face the dire reality of having to reduce that to 20,000 boxes a year from 1st July.

"It’s a deeply upsetting and concerning prospect so we hope the Government will reconsider this decision given its impact on people who are already struggling."

- Helen Robinson, Manutaki / CEO

We are pleading with the government to reconsider their decision, so that we can continue distributing food to families who need it. There are too many families that suffer the reality of poverty. Providing food support allows them to engage in education, employment, and positive social connections.

Petition

No one in Aotearoa should not have access to food. Please add your name if you agree. The budget is released on 30 May, so we need your support today.

Dear Minister Upston,

I wish for an Aotearoa where families have the food they need stay physically and mentally well, go to school or to work, and contribute well to society.

Adding my signature to this petition is a request for you to please reinstate the funding for food security so that the Auckland City Mission and other agencies can help families get the nourishment they need and deserve.

Our Impact

The state of hunger in Aotearoa

One in five New Zealanders experience food insecurity, meaning they can't afford enough food and worry about where the next meal is coming from. Over the last few years, the number of kiwis experiencing poverty-related hunger has grown steadily.

What we do

The Auckland City Mission provides boxes of food to people that need it. One box of food is enough to feed a family, or an individual for four days.

Our Impact

Last year alone, we gave out the equivalent of 2.4 million meals.

We have long believed that while our support providing nutritious food for people who need it is crucial, there is more we can do. We are part of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective, who are committed to addressing the root causes of food related poverty and to working together to create a food secure Aotearoa.
